UCU- When did you start your business?
UBSA- The day Shower Art was born:
I came out of the shower one day about three years sgo – and told Doug, my husband, that there should be a way to hang art in the shower. Normally, my ideas stop at about that stage but Doug did some research and figured out how we could make waterproof art pieces to hang in the shower. We spent the next two years trying to figure out how to attach the suction cup to the back. Once we mastered that (about a year ago) – we started our actual business: Ugly Baby Shower Art.
And just about two months ago, I came up with the idea for Franken-scarves – scarves made out of recycled t-shirts that have free-motion embroidery all over them.
UCU-What is your favorite craft supply?
UBSA-Right now – my new sewing/embroidery machine. I love it. It loves me. Leave us alone.
UCU-Where do you sell your work?
UBSA- In our Etsy shop: http://www.uglybaby.etsy.com
First Thursday – we open our studio for the Art Walk. 216 Alaskan Way S (under the viaduct between Main and Washington). We sell our Shower Art & Franken-scarves there and I also display all the items currently up for trade in bARTer Sauce, an experiment in trading for art and odd objects: http://www.bartersauce.com.
I Heart Rummage http://www.iheartindie.com/
Twillight Artist Collective http://www.twilightart.net/index.html
Those are our regular spots — but we do craft shows with the Etsy RAIN http://etsyrain.blogspot.com/ group when they’ve got something going on — and we’re pretty much selling anywhere we’ve been invited.
UCU-What is your favorite part of doing big shows such as UCU?
UBSA- We’ve been in business for just over a year so we haven’t done UCU before. We’ve heard such great things about UCU — when other vendors talk about it, their faces light up and tears well up in their eyes. So it must be good. I’m looking forward to deciding what my favorite part is come December 6th and 7th.
UCU-Most anticipated “hot item” at your booth this year?
UBSA- Well, we sell two things. Shower Art – waterproor art you can hang in your shower with a suction cup (http://www.uglybaby.etsy.com) and Franken-scarves – scarves (& arm warmers) made from upcycled t-shirts and jersey top sheets.
So…..hopefully, both of them are hot items. Or at least one. Otherwise we’re in real trouble. he he he
